Benidorm from only £164 per person

Benidorm is on the Costa Blanca, on the east coast of Spain, 42km (26 miles) north east of Alicante and 55km (34 miles) north east of Alicante Airport. Benidorm occupies a large crescent-shaped bay bisected by a small promontory on which is sited the Old Town. The
mountains begin to rise behind Levante and there is excellent hill-walking just a few kilometres outside the town.

Benidorm remains the most visited holiday resort in Spain and its popularity shows no signs of flagging. The resort's initial raison d'être, its wonderful beaches, continue to be the biggest draw but in recent years major theme parks and golf courses have been added, and in an attempt to move itself upmarket, Aiguera Park and amphitheatre have been built in the centre of
town offering free cultural activities, and while the New Town may be a mega resort of concrete canyons, the Old Town, on the promontory that divides the two main beaches, retains a small-town Spanish feel.

Hammamet, Tunisia for only £184 per person

Hammamet is south of Tunisia's Cap Bon peninsula, 10km (6 miles) southwest of Nabeul, 64km (40 miles) south of Tunis and the nearest airport and 85km (53 miles) north of Sousse. The city has excellent connections to all these cities by road and train.

The town overlooks the turquoise waters of the Gulf of Hammamet, and is at the beginning of the Cap Bon peninsula, which is only 140km (84 miles) from Sicily. Inland it is all rolling vineyards and agricultural land.

Known as Tunisia's Saint Tropez, Hammamet is the country's prime holiday destination. It all started in the 1920s when the Romanian millionaire George Sebastian fell in love with what was then a tiny fishing hamlet. His villa on the beach was described by architect Frank Lloyd Wright as ‘the most beautiful house in the world', and it became a refuge for artist and writer friends. Other wealthy Europeans followed suit and built along the sweeping beach. Soon the secret of Hammamet's beautiful setting, pleasant climate and stunning beaches was out, and quite a
few of the glamorous villas became part of the large scale touristic development of the 1970s. The picturesque medina is at the heart of the town. To the north and south hotels cater mainly for cheap package tours, while the more upmarket hotels have moved 10km (6 miles)
further south to an area known as Yasmine Hammamet.

Costa Teguise, Lanzarote from only £227 per person

Costa Teguise lies on the southeast coast of Lanzarote in the Canary Islands, 7km (4.5 miles) northwest of the island capital Arrecife. The resort lies on the coastal plain with much of it looking onto a sheltered sandy bay.

The man-made resort of Costa Teguise was developed from scratch in the late 1970s, initially
as a luxury holiday playground, patronised by wealthy Spanish residents and King Hussein of Jordan, and boasting projects under the influence of island design guru César Manrique.
These remain but as the resort grew into a less exclusive mass-market family destination (now the second biggest on the island) so the millionaires moved on.

Costa Teguise boasts four golden sandy beaches, the largest being the Playa de las Cucharas, renowned for windsurfing with several schools around the bay. Each July it hosts
the Professional Windsurfers Association World Cup. In winter the winds drop making the waves more suitable for novices and the beach better for families. Adjacent, Playa Charcos is a
smaller white-sand beach, also favoured by windsurfers. Very close by are two sheltered beaches good for smaller children. Playa Jablillo is an attractive little beach overlooked directly by a large hotel and can get crowded in high season. Playa Bastian is a bit quieter.
